Example
- Waist 85 cm, height 175 cm → Ratio 0.486 — increased risk; target waist ≤ 87.5 cm
- Waist 95 cm, male, US Army (AR 600-9) → Pass — within the 101.6 cm screening limit
Formula
Ratio = waist circumference / height, both in the same unit. Boundary values: below 0.35 underweight, 0.35–0.43 healthy, 0.43–0.50 increased risk, 0.50–0.58 high risk, above 0.58 very high risk — the rule of thumb is to keep your waist under half your height. The US military standards work differently: they screen absolute waist circumference, not a ratio. Army (AR 600-9) limits are 40 in (101.6 cm) for men and 35.5 in (90.2 cm) for women; Air Force limits are 39 in (99.1 cm) for men and 35.5 in (90.2 cm) for women. A waist above the limit is only a screening flag that leads to a body-fat assessment, not a diagnosis.
